The use of seasoned hardwood is recommended. Avoid using softwoods such as pine or cedar, because they are likely to throw sparks. Do not burn trash, leaves, paper, cardboard or plywood in the fire ring. Do not use flammable liquids such as gasoline, alcohol, diesel fuel, kerosene or charcoal lighter to light or relight fires.

Do not use directly on a wooden deck or grass. Always use the  fire pit, fire ring or other item on a hard, level, non-combustible surface, such as stone, dirt or sand.
